I support recalculating the funding formula for the foundation budget, based on the recommendations of the Foundation Budget Review Commission. There have been tremendous cost increases in areas such as special education, health care and supporting English Language Learners (ELL) and low income students since Chapter 70 was implemented 25 years ago. The budget needs to adjust for these funding gaps. I will also support a more-regular review of Chapter 70 by the Foundation Budget Review Commission as inflation and cost of services continue to change.

This question comes at time when the House of Representatives voted to leave out crucial funding from Chapter 70 for initiatives such as Special Education, and supports for low income students. This will affect the most vulnerable in our district who need these resources, including students with disabilities. Due to the committee’s inability to compromise, we have finished out another session without any solutions to the dire need for a modern school funding formula.

As state representative, I will take the lead and fight to ensure our district’s public schools receive the funding they need to succeed.
